Under 14's 2007-8
Golborne
Under 14s travelled to St Cuthbert’s looking to kick on
after recent impressive displays.
Both sides where very organised defensively for
the first 15 mins of the game and both sides showed some very
aggressive defence, this was epitomised by Sam Baker who lead
from the front with bone crunching tackles.
Golbornes pack worked very hard in defence and
Dean Pennington, Andy Gibson Michael Flannery all putting in
superb defensive efforts throughout the match.
A kick from the Cuthbert’s attack wasn’t dealt
with properly by the Golborne defence and this lead to the first
try of the match, try was converted 6 - nil.
Golborne had plenty of possession but failed to
complete there sets and this lead to more defensive workload.
Golborne gave away a penalty under their own
posts and Cuthbert’s showing respect for Golborne decided to
take the two points on offer.
Half time 8 nil to St Cuthbert’s.
Golborne began the 2nd half the better with
better ball retention this showed with a superb 75m effort from
Ben Currie and the try was converted by the very solid and
enthusiastic scrum half Peter Wright.
Golborne began to tire after the defensive
efforts of the first half, however sub Greg Wilde produced a
fine pass of a very well worked move again to put Ben in for his
2nd try of the match.
Golborne began to grow in confidence and began to
dominate for long periods of the 2nd half, until the final few
minutes when Cuthbert’s dived over for a close range try after a
very dubious refereeing decision gave St Cuthbert’s the
possession near the Golborne line.
Golborne started to tire and this lead to a break
by Cuthbert’s down the left hand side and a quick play the ball
saw further score by Cuthbert’s.
Final score 20-10.
A superb effort from both teams who provided some
exciting Rugby for the enthralled spectators.

Portico Vine v Golborne
Parkside 16-9-07
A contest in every sense of
the word - every player on the pitch stood up to be counted! A game
of Rugby League from the past, all the 'nitty gritty' of the 'old
game', enclosed within some modern day skills to keep the spectators
enthralled.
The game started with some of
the finest passing and running skills from both sides who, both
'wanted' the win. Good attacking Rugby was defended to the utmost
by 2 teams of equal quality, the only thing missing was 'sky
sports'. Portico saw their experience tell when going into the
lead, only for Golborne to come straight back at them. The St
Helens team went into the interval 10 - 4 to the good.
The 2nd half saw both teams
"grind out" a 4 - 4 draw, leaving Golborne defeated 14 - 8. Golborne
sent 'shock waves' throughout the Premiership with this result
today, but they must carry on with the improvement in the remainder
of the season.
